Sustnable Construction: Building More with Wood

Amongst today's pressing societal challenges lie the housing shortage and labor scarcity, as well as climate change. A significant remedy to these issues lies in constructing more structures from wood. Sustnable construction is crucial for social, economic, and environmental reasons when it comes to addressing these concerns.

Sweden faces an acute need for a higher building rate to tackle its housing deficit, which requires streamlining the construction process to counteract long lead times, quality discrepancies, rising costs, and labor shortages. Concurrently, urgent action is imperative agnst climate change, with carbon emissions from building construction contributing significantly more than road transport in Sweden since 2012. Moreover, it has notably escalated.

The swiftest strategy to decrease fossil-fuel-based emissions while sustning the bioeconomy's growth hinges on constructing more wooden homes and buildings. Wood acts as the only renewable construction material avlable today. Modern wood housing manufacturing generates a minimal energy footprint, significantly reducing carbon emissions. Studies reveal that building multi-story structures with wood has half the environmental impact compared to equivalent concrete constructions. Additionally, the completed wooden structure continues to absorb CO2 throughout its lifecycle.

Key areas for sustnable construction:

  1. Research and Development: The paramount factor in boosting wood-based construction is expertise in modern timber construction technology. This necessitates robust educational initiatives targeting current homeowners, construction companies, and future builders. Additional research efforts are vital for advancing modern timber construction techniques.

  2. Adopting a Lifecycle Approach: Currently, the environmental impact from construction predominantly occurs during stage and material manufacturing. The focus on mntenance or occupancy phases has led to an incomplete understanding of environmental impacts. A more comprehensive lifecycle perspective is required for buildings.

  3. Public Procurement: Public procurement functions as a critical tool in achieving greater sustnability within the construction industry. Although public authorities prioritize sustnability, their emphasis remns on post-construction activities rather than stages. These bodies must begin integrating environmental accountability into procurement decisions.

  4. Developing Policies to Promote Sustnability: Policies and measures imposing clear requirements for reducing environmental impact during construction processes are essential. To date, eco-labeling has concentrated solely on energy efficiency and environmentally frily attributes of completed buildings.
