In December 2023 and January of the following year, the Worldwide Sustnable Construction Barometer was conducted by the CSA Institute to gauge the current state of sustnable construction across various global regions. The survey gathered insights from over 1,760 respondents aged 18 or older, located in diverse countries including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Czechia, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, South Africa, Spn, Switzerland, Turkiye, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, the US, and Vietnam.
The report highlighted that sustnable construction is predominantly associated with environmental conservation rather than broader considerations of well-being. Environmental protection emerged as the primary objective for respondents worldwide. However, there was a notable gap in understanding its full scope; only one out of ten individuals linked sustnable construction to the health benefits it offers to inhabitants throughout its lifecycle.
When asked about key priorities to accelerate sustnable construction development, three areas were identified with significant interest:
Public Awareness: Rsing public awareness was cited as crucial, particularly in Africa and Asia, by nearly a third of respondents.
Energy Renovation: Focus on energy efficiency improvements was prioritized in countries with established housing stock, like France, the US, and Germany.
Government Initiatives: While the importance of public policies standards, d programs, regulations is acknowledged, it remns underemphasized by industry practitioners compared to demand for assistance from government entities.
The survey also revealed a shift in professional practices, with a growing number considering suppliers' commitment to sustnable construction as an essential factor in their selection criteria. This reflects a broader commitment toward sustnable projects.
Notably, over 85 of surveyed professionals reported being involved or expecting to be involved in sustnable construction activities within the next five years. There was also a significant increase in those who had already benefited from trning in sustnable practicesup by six points compared to the previous year's surveyand students showed increased awareness about the challenges facing sustnable construction.
Geographical nuances were evident in perceptions of which players are most legitimate for advancing sustnable construction:
In Europe, public institutions emerged as a strong second option.
Canadian, UK, and Vietnamese respondents highlighted elected officials as highly capable leaders.
In contrast, private companies were seen as playing a more significant role in the US and South America.
